Twitch Android App Development Begins Anew

The last time our Android app received an update was on April 20, 2012. Since then, it’s languished in a state of development limbo as engineers were pulled away to mission-critical projects, and our iOS app demanded great attention. With the recent launch of the Ouya gaming console, we found yet another incentive to return to Android development, as the platforms are one in the same.

Today, we make good on our promise of renewed Android development with the release of the Twitch app for Android, (v1.0.5). Or as we here in Marketing like to call it, The Twitch App for Android Version 1.0 Part II: Droid Harder.

Rebuilt entirely from scratch, this stability release is the first of many that we’ll be issuing this year for Android. As such, you’ll find that it’s still quite barebones, but is far more stable than before. You still can’t log in, which means it still doesn’t feature chat, notifications, or any other related services, but that will all be changing throughout the year as we slowly bring it up to feature parity with its iOS counterpart.

You’ll want to stay tuned to this space, as we’ll periodically be hosting beta programs to give a select portion of Android users a sneak peek at future builds, to help us create an even better, and more stable app for the general public.

We know it’s been a very long time coming, and to receive a new update that doesn’t add new features can be frustrating, but this is the best course of action in order for us to create an awesome, and stable Android app. As always, share your thoughts with us in the comments below, and let us know how the stability of this release compares to the previous version.
